On a perfect hiking day in Ashland, 11 of us were off on the Toothpick trail headed to Lewis Lookout.
The Toothpick trail, where the Doug Fir “grow like toothpicks” always offers a serene outdoor experience (unless you are a mountain biker headed down the Lizard Trail). We admired the new Boy Scout project, a bike repair station at Lamb’s Quarter. Then, we trekked up Caterpillar, turning left onto the Gyre and Gimble trails to Lewis Lookout. At the Lewis picnic bench, we met 4 tourists from New York, California and Portland, in town for hiking and plays, who generously took our group photo.
We enjoyed an early lunch around the picnic bench and then returned via the Gimble Loop trail to Toothpick. It was lovely day to share the resilience of hiking with friends. Total distance: 5 miles; elevation gain about 400’.
